Rubella in Taiwan

03 February 2015

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) announced (Thu 29 Jan 2015) this year's 1st rubella case in a 41 year old male who resides in northern Taiwan. Since the case had not recently travelled overseas, the case is considered to be indigenous. In 2014, Taiwan reported 7 rubella cases, 6 of which were imported.

Advice for Travellers

Rubella infection has serious consequences for the unborn child if acquired by a woman during pregnancy. It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
