Measles in Canada

10 February 2015

Two separate measles outbreaks have been reported in Canada. The first was reported on 2 February 2015, in Toronto, in the province of Ontario. Four laboratory confirmed cases have been recorded; 2 children under 2-years-of-age and 2 adults. There are no known links between the cases and the source of infection remains under investigation.

The second outbreak was reported on 3 February 2015, in the province of Quebec in the east of Canada. The outbreak occurred as a cluster within the same family and is linked to the current outbreak in the state of California in the U.S. Eight suspected cases have been reported; the family are unimmunised against measles on religious grounds.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
