Measles in Kyrgyzstan

11 February 2015

The media has reported on a measles outbreak in Kyrgyzstan. As of 26 January 2015, 2598 suspected measles cases have been identified in the country, of those, 464 have been laboratory confirmed.

The outbreak is affecting a wide age range and includes adults. The worst affected age group among younger cases is the 10-19 years, followed by children

Measles vaccine coverage is low in Kyrgyzstan and WHO has recommended that the Ministry of Health carries out mass vaccination to contain the outbreak. UNICEF will assist the Ministry of Health in the vaccination campaign.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
