Measles in South Sudan

13 February 2015

An outbreak of measles has been reported in Yida refugee camp in the north of South Sudan. The infection was identified in refugees entering the camp after travelling from the Nuba Mountain region of Sudan. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) are in the camp and have admitted 93 suspected measles cases to their hospital for treatment. The camp is overcrowded with around 70 000 refugees and the outbreak poses a very serious threat.

In collaboration with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), MSF has launched a mass vaccination campaign aiming to vaccinate 90 percent of the children in the camps and the nearby host communities.

An estimated 35 000 children will be targeted for vaccination over a period of five days.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
