The Ministry of Health has issued an alert to the public to identify any person or animal that may have had contact with a cat confirmed to have rabies. On 10 February 2015, the cat attacked two children, an adult and a domestic dog; residents of the Natur community in the southern Golan Heights. Post-exposure prophylaxis has been administered to the individuals who were bitten.
Since the beginning of 2015, rabies has been confirmed in four animals; two dogs, a wolf and the cat in this report. The total number of confirmed animal rabies in Israel during 2014, was 14; 4 wolves, 3 dogs, 2 foxes, 2 jackals, 2 badgers and one calf.
Israel is considered by WHO to be a high risk destinaton for rabies. Travellers are advised to avoid all animal contact and report any bites for medical assessment promptly. Pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
