Cholera in Mozambique (Update)

The cholera outbreak following flooding in northern Mozambique is worsening. The number of cases now stands at 2400 and 29 cholera related deaths have been reported. The city of Tete which lies near the borders with Malawi and Zimbabwe is badly affected with around 70 suspected cases requiring medical attention daily.

Cholera outbreaks during the summer rainy season (Oct-Mar) are not uncommon in Mozambique.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
