Hepatitis A in Australia

The Department of Health in Australia is investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A that may be linked to the consumption of berries that have been frozen. A total of 14 cases have been reported from 4 states of the country.

The common link between cases is frozen raspberries imported from China, the distributer in Australia has recalled the suspect products in the meantime. The Chief Medical Officer, however, has not confirmed the source of hepatitis A virus (HAV).

The link to frozen berries was first identified by health officials in Victoria when 4 cases were found to be linked. Further cases have been reported from New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.

Advice for Travellers

As the implicated product has been withdrawn in the affected country, the risk to travellers is very low.
