The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has reported an outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) in Maryland county in southern Liberia. More than 500 cases have been reported in the county. The IRC is working with local healthcare teams to raise awarenes, identify cases and encourage parents to bring their children for immunisation against pertussis.

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. The JCVI recommends pertussis boosters for pregnant women, but not for other adults in the UK.
