Melioidosis Increase in Malaysia (Update)

11 March 2015

Pahang Health director Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar has advised that cases of melioidosis are on the increase in Pahang, with 21 cases detected during the first 2 months of 2015, up from 16 cases throughout 2014. Of the 21 cases reported in 2015, 7 were detected in the Jerantut district, Bera (5), Maran (3), Temerloh (2, and 1 each in Kuantan, Lipis, Pekan, and Rompin.

The increase in the number of melioidosis cases is linked to flooding in the northeastern states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang in peninsular Malaysia.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers can acquire melioidosis by walking in muddy water, handling muddy items, or breathing air-borne particles while using high-powered hoses. Travellers should take precautions against the disease by wearing waterproof shoes, gloves, and masks when gardening or cleaning up after floods.

Those most at risk include those with underlying conditions, such as diabetes, heavy alcohol intake, cancer, advanced age, kidney or lung disease and those being treated for cancer and on long-term steroid therapy medication.
