The cholera outbreak in Nsanje district in the Southern Region of Malawi is ongoing and beginning to spread. The outbreak followed recent severe flooding in the country.
To date, the number of cholera cases now stands at 159, with 27 cases being treated in one week recently.
The District Health Office is endeavouring to contain the outbreak with ongoing awareness and sensitsation campaigns. Aid has included donations of chlorine and rehydration salts by several non governmental organisations.

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
