Measles in Sudan (Update)

06 April 2015

A measles vaccination campaign will be launced by UNICEF in Sudan following the ongoing outbreak in the country. UNICEF will support the Ministry of Health in administering 9.6 million doses of vaccine in an attempt to contain the outbreak.

The outbreak began three months ago and has affected 16 out of 18 states of the country. As of 26 March 2015, 1120 confirmed measles cases have been recorded. The worst affected area is the state of Kassala with 353 cases, followed by Red Sea with 205 cases and North Darfur with 104 cases.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
