Typhoid in Tanzania (Zanzibar)

Health officials in Zanzibar, Tanzania have declared an outbreak of typhoid fever in the municipality. According to this media report, at least 22 cases have been identified. Those affected have been located in the following areas: Mtopepo, Mwera, Muembeladu, Mbuyuni, Kwamtipura, Tomondo, Muembetanga, Kibweni, Chumbuni, Kinuni, and Nyarugusu.

Health officials are raising awareness and providing information on ways to reduce risk and the spread of infection.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for all travellers to Zanzinbar. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and safe food and water whilst in Zanzibar.
