Malaria in Democratic Republic of Congo

28 April 2015

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) (Doctors Without Borders) has reported an ongoing outbreak of malaria in the South Kivu province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Malaria is present throughout the year in DRC, however, this outbreak has been particularly severe.

The hospital in Baraka which is supported by MSF is being overwhelmed by the number of people seeking medical attention for malaria. Many of the patients are children under the age of 5-years who require intensive care.

During 2014, MSF personnel in Baraka treated 89 776 malaria patients; this compares with 42 390 cases in 2013 and 42 305 cases in 2012.

Advice for Travellers

DRC is a high risk destination for malaria and antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended for the entire country throughout the year. Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites and report any fever promptly for treatment.
