Mumps in Australia

28 April 2015

A small outbreak of mumps has been reported in the region of Kimberley, in the state of Western Australia. Six cases have been identified; five in children between the ages of 8-13 years and one adult.

Vaccine coverage against mumps is good in Kimberley and 2009, was the last time a case of mumps was recorded in the local community. The last outbreak in Kimberley was in 2007 when 153 cases were recorded.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
