Wild Poliovirus in Israel

07 May 2015

It has now been more than 1 year since wild poliovirus (WPV) type 1 was detected in environmental samples in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The last positive sample was collected in southern Israel on 30 March 2014. Since April 2014, all environmental samples have been reported as negative for WPV.

Although it has been more than 1 year since wild poliovirus was detected, WHO classes Israel as a: State no longer infected by wild poliovirus, but which remains vulnerable to international spread.
