Zika Virus Infection in Vanuatu

The media has reported on Zika virus (ZIKV) infection on the island of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. The infection has reportedly been confirmed, however, the number of cases has not been mentioned in this report. ZIKV in transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and this is the first time that it has been identified on Vanuatu.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
