Undiagnosed Illness in Brazil (Northeast)

The Ministry of Health in Brazil has been monitoring since late February 2015, an illness presenting with an itchy rash and low grade fever. The illness is occurring in the northeast of the country and cases have been identified in the states of Bahia, Maranhao, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba and Sergipe. The illness is mild and self-limiting, with an age rage of 4 months to 98 years; the most affected age group is 20-40 years. A total of 6807 cases have been reported in the region.

Investigation into the outbreak is ongoing; thus far 425 samples have been laboratory tested, of those, 13% have been positive for dengue virus. Other possible diagnoses include, measles, parvovirus B19, chikungunya and other arboviruses.
