Undiagnosed Illness in Brazil (Update)

18 May 2015

The Ministry of Health in Brazil has been monitoring since late February 2015, an illness presenting with an itchy rash and low grade fever. The illness is occurring in the northeast of the country and cases have been identified in the states of Bahia, Maranhao, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba and Sergipe.

On 15 May 2015, the Ministry of Health confirmed that Zika virus (ZIKV) is circulating in Brazil. Laboratory samples taken from suspected cases in the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte were tested at the Instituto Evandro Chaga. Eight samples from each state were confirmed as positive for ZIKV. Suspected cases in other parts of the country have yet to be confirmed.

The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the situation and investigate new suspected cases. Surveillance is in place to assist identification, control and prevention of ZIKV circulation.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
