Avian Influenza (H7N9) (Human) in China (Update)

19 May 2015

On 9 May 2015, the Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission notified WHO of 6 new laboratory-confirmed cases (including 2 deaths) of human infection with avian influenza A (H7N9).

The cases were identified between 26 March to 12 April 2015 and age ranged between 3 to 67 years. Of the 6 cases, 4 (67%) were male, 4 cases (67%) reported exposure to poultry and 2 cases (33%) had unknown exposure. Cases were reported from five provinces and municipalities: Anhui (1), Fujian (1), Jiangsu (1), Shanghai (1), and Zhejiang (2).

WHO is monitoring the epidemiological situation and carrying out risk assessment based on the latest information. The public health risk from avian influenza A(H7N9) viruses has not changed overall. Compared with March and April, the number of new cases is decreasing.

The Chinese government is continuing to take steps to strengthen surveillance, reinforce case management and medical treatment and inform and communicate risk with the public.
