Cholera in Tanzania

20 May 2015

An outbreak of cholera has been reported among refugees who have left Burundi to seek safety in Tanzania owing to the threat of political violence in the run up to the elections in June. The refugees are arriving daily in the village of Kagunga beside lake Tanganyika;around 80 000 have settled in the village thus far. The population of the village is normally around 11 382 and the sanitation and health facilities have been overwhelmed by the outbreak of cholera.

The aid agency, International Rescue Committee (IRC), is providing medical care in Kagunga and is tranporting refugees by ship on a daily basis to a transit camp in Kigoma, also on lake Tanganyika. From there refugees can move on to Nyarugusu, a much larger refugee camp in Kasulu district, Kigoma region.
