Measles in Congo

22 May 2015

Measles is an ongoing problem in Congo. Since the beginning of 2015, around 100 measles related deaths have been recorded in a large outbreak in Pweto territory, Katanga Province in the southeast of the country.

The aid agency Alima has been conducting an immunisation campaign in the region since 13 May 2015.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
