Cholera in Burundi

The Ministry of Health has reported an outbreak of cholera in Kabonga, Nyanza-Lac in Makamba province, 150 km south of the capital Bujumbura. Thirty eight cases including 3 deaths have been reported. The Public Health Minister has reported the recent return of some Burundian refugees from Tanzania who were suffering from cholera.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/ water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
