Mumps in Canada

02 June 2015

Four suspected cases of mumps have been reported in two high schools (2 in each) in the city of Guelph, southwestern Ontario. An investigation is trying to identify the source of infection; it has been 5 years since mumps was last reported in the area, although sporadic cases do occur in Ontario.

Pupils are being advised to attend for free MMR vaccine if not already protected. In order to control the outbreak, the authorites have recommended that unimmunised pupils are kept at home for 16 days or until the outbreak is declared over. Those who have received only the first dose of MMR can return to school following a second dose. This is a media report.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
