Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in French Guiana

02 June 2015

An outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis (L. braziliensis) has been reported among a group of scientists who were on a field trip to the Amazon rainforest in French Guiana. The group numbered 24 members, 7 contracted the infection and developed symptoms on average 19 days following their return home.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has alerted US doctors to be aware of the risk of infection in travellers returning from the area. This particular strain of cutaneous leishmaniasis responds differently to traditional treatment of the condition.

Prior to this outbreak, L. braziliensis infection was seen in Argentina, Brazil, Panama and Venezuala.

Advice for Travellers

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is transmitted by the bite of an infected sand fly.

Avoid outdoor activities after dusk where possible. Practice good bite avoidance measures, use a fine mesh, insecticide-impregnated bednets and sleep elevated off the floor. This reduces the number of bites as sandflies are poor fliers.
