Zika Virus Infection (Unconfirmed) in Domincan Republic

The first case of Zika virus infection has been reported in Dominican Republic.

The case is a 12-year-old girl from the southern sector of Puerta Plata city in Puerta Plata province on the northern coast of the country. The girl was admitted to a clinic with symptoms suggestive of dengue fever or chikungunya virus infection. Medical staff informed the parents that the patient was suffering from Zika virus infection which is transmitted by the mosquito that also transmits dengue and chikungunya virus, i.e. Aedes aegypti.

This is a media report and official confirmation is awaited.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
