Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in Kazakhstan

The first case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus found in Zhambyl district of the Zhambyl region has been reported. As of 21 May (2015) CCHF had been diagnosed in 2 inhabitants, one in the village of Koktobe of Talas district and one in the village of Kapal of Zhambyl district.

Advice for Travellers

CCHF is a low risk for the average traveller; it is spread by infected ticks from a reservoir usually in animals such as cattle, sheep and goats. CCHF can also be transmitted by contact with the blood of an infected animal. Avoidance of tick bites is essential in risk areas.
