Chikungunya Virus Infection in Brazil (Update)

As of 16 June 2015, almost 7000 cases of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection have been reported in Bahia state.

The worst affected municipalities include: Feira de Santana 1438 confirmed cases, Valente 1803 confirmed cases and Riacao do Jacuipe 1216 confirmed cases. Other municipalities affected include: Salvador, Ribeira do Pombal, Vera Cruz, Baxia Grande, Capela do Alto Alegre, Ipira and Sao Domingos.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
