Diphtheria in South Africa (Update)

Further cases of laboratory-confirmed toxigenic C. diphtheriae have been reported in the ongoing outbreak in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province. A total of 15 cases have been reported; of those, 10 are confirmed, 2 are probable and 3 are possible. Cases have been reported from 2 of KZN's 11 districts; Ethekwini and Ugu. Age range of cases; 4-41-years-of-age, with 73% of cases under 15 years. Only one case was up-to-date with age appropriate diptheria vaccination.

The KZN Ministry of Health, University of KZN, National Institute for Communicable Diseases and WHO are collaborating to learn more of the outbreak and the preventive actions required in local and national terms.

Advice for Travellers

Diphtheria vaccination is sometimes recommended for travellers to South Africa who are at higher risk of infection.

Travellers should ensure that they are up-to-date with the UK national vaccine schedule.
