Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in Russian Federation

The number of inhabitants of the Rostov region who contracted Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has reached 50 people. This was diagnosed in residents of Rostov (1 case), Novocherkassk (1), Volgodonsk and Belaya Kalitva areas (2 cases in the each of these districts), Veselovsky, Dubovsky, Zernogradskiy, Krasny Sulin, Morozovskiy, Myasnikovsky, Neklinovskiy, Oblivsky, Remontnensky and Tselinsky districts (1 case in the each of these districts).

Most cases were registered in Salsk (14), Semikarakorsk, Martinovski (7), Orlovsky (5), Zimovnikovskiy (5) and proletarian (3) areas. Since the beginning of the year (2015), 1 case with a fatal outcome was recorded in the Rostov region.

Advice for Travellers

CCHF is a low risk for the average traveller; it is spread by infected ticks from a reservoir usually in animals such as cattle, sheep and goats. CCHF can also be transmitted by contact with the blood of an infected animal. Avoidance of tick bites is essential in risk areas.
