Vaccine-Derived Poliomyelitis in Madagascar

14 July 2015

In the past week, 3 cases of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) have been reported in the regions of Anosy, Androy and Boeni (one in each). The total number of cVDPV1 cases in Madagascar for 2015, now stands at 8.

The new cases are genetically linked to a case reported in September 2014,indicating ongoing circulation of the virus.

The emergency outbreak response has been stepped up; National Immunization Days (NIDs) are scheduled between 4-7 August using trivalent oral polio vaccine (OPV) and in September and October using bivalent OPV with dates to be confirmed.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of polio vaccine according to the UK childhood schedule. It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected. Travellers should also take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
