Tick-borne Encephalitis in Russian Federation

Tick-borne encephalitis cases are being reported from two regions of the Russian Federation.

St Petersburg is one region with the highest incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The TBE season began in April 2015, and 16 cases have been reported to date; this is more than 3 times the figure for the same time period of 2014. Epidemiologists report that during the first 6 months of 2015, a total of 5066 tick bites were reported; a 67% increase compared to the same time period of 2014.

Altai Republic has recorded 3052 reported tick bites since the beginning of 2015. In the region, 77 tick-borne infections have been recorded: TBE 12, Lyme disease 7 and tick-borne typhus 58. The worst affected regions of the republic are: Ongudaisky, Ust-Kan, Chemal, Ust-Koksinsky and Kosh-Agach.
