Measles in Austria (Update)

29 July 2015

The outbreak of measles in Austria is ongoing. The increase in measles cases was first reported in April 2015; as of 22 July, at total of 305 cases have been reported since the beginning of 2015. The majority of cases were reported from: Niederösterreich (40%), Oberösterreich (27%), Vienna (19%) and Steiermark (10%). All age groups have been affected but mostly adolescents and young adults. The majority of cases were unvaccinated (70%), or vaccination status unknown (21%).

Sixteen cases were imported: 8 from Germany, 3 from Bosnia and Herzegovina and one case each from India, Hungary, Romania, Spain and France. Genotype D8 has been identified, the same strain that was responsible for an outbreak in Bosnia and Herzegovina and an outbreak in Berlin.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
