Chikungunya Virus Infection in Spain

The health authorities of Valencia in Spain have reported an autochthonous case of Chikungunya virus infection; notified on 31 July 2015. The case is a 60-year-old man who developed symptoms on 7 July 2015. He gave no history of travel outwith the EU, however, he did travel in Spain and France during the incubation period. The majority of that time was spent in Gandía, Valencia region, where Aedes albopictus mosquitoes were identified in 2013.

As of 12 July 2015, a total of 86 imported cases of chikungunya virus infection were reported in Spain, of those, 18 were in the Valencia region.
