Flooding in India

The monsoon season has resulted in several states of India reporting severe flooding following torrential rains. As of 4 August 2015, more than 1 million individuals are sheltering in relief camps in shcools and government offices and at least 180 deaths have been reported. The majority of deaths are from drowing although landslides have resulted in a small number of deaths.

The worst affected states include: West Bengal and Manipur in the northeast of the country where rivers have burst their banks and roads and bridges have been destroyed. The flooding in West Bengal was made worse when Cyclone Komen hit the east coast on Friday. Deaths have been reported from the state of Orissa in the east and Rajasthan in the northwest. The situation in Gujarat state in the west is improving as the water level is receding, people are able to return to their homes; 72 deaths have been reported in Gujarat.
