Chikungunya Virus Infection in Mexico (Update)

The media has reported on chikungunya virus infection in Mexico. As of 31 July 2015, a total of 3306 cases have been recorded nationally in 2015. Sixteen out of 32 states in Mexico have reported cases, however, the whole country is at risk due to the presence of the vector counrtywide. Only 10% of cases have required admission to hospital for treatment.

Health officials report that cases were identified in a timely manner via the National Disease Monitoring System, which has enabled health authorities to expand their preventive efforts.

The public have been encouraged to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection, as health education and the participation of the community are key to controlling the spread of chickungunya virus.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
