Dengue Fever in Belize

The health authorities have reported an increasing number of suspected cases of dengue fever in Belize. A total of 1638 suspected cases have been tested, of those, 261 have been confirmed as dengue virus infections. A further 384 clinical cases have been reported. A total of 225 confirmed cases were reported during the same time period of 2014.

The worst affected areas are the large towns of Punta Gorda, San Ignacio and Corozal.

The authorities are encouraging the local communities to assist in the clean-up campaigns in their areas.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
