Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in New Zealand

The media has reported on an outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) in Otago in the south of South Island. The Public Health medical officer has been notified of 125 suspected pertussis cases in the past two weeks; one week ago the total number was 80. Twenty four cases have been laboratory confirmed as pertussis infection.

The first cases in the outbreak were identified in Wanaka but have since been reported from Cromwell, Queenstown and Dunedin.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. The JCVI recommends pertussis boosters for pregnant women, but not for other adults in the UK.
