Chikungunya Virus Infection in the Caribbean/Americas (Update)

The outbreak of chikungunya virus infection in the Caribbean and Americas which began in December 2013, is ongoing in certain areas; mainly the Americas. The total number of cases in this outbreak is now 1 634 535. In the latest weekly update from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) a total of 5881 new cases were reported.

Colombia continues to reported large numbers each week with 3690 in the last weekly report making a total of 316 563 cases in 2015. Venezuela also reported a high number (1425) of new cases in the last weekly report making a total of 14 204 in 2015.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
