West Nile Virus and St Louis Encephalitis in the United States (Arizona)

24 August 2015

The media has reported on an increase in two mosquito-borne viral infections in Maricopa County, Arizona state, southwestern United States. Cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and St Louis encephalitis have occurred throughout the state. A total of 46 cases, including 3 deaths, of WNV and 12 cases of St Louis encephaltitis have been recorded. The vector for both these infections is the Culex mosquito and the symptoms are similar for both illnesses.

Health officials report that the amount of rain in the area may have contributed to mosquito breeding sites and the public is being advised to remove standing water from around the home.
