Yellow Fever in Mali

The Ministry of Health for Mali has published the Epidemiological Situation Report for week 33 of 2015.

Since the beginning of the year (2015) to epidemiological week 33, a total of 30 suspected cases of yellow fever have been reported nationally. In the last epidemiological week, three suspected cases of yellow fever have been notified: Kati health district in Koulikoro region (1); Koutiala health district in Sikasso region (1) and Gourma Rharous health district in Timbuktu region (1).

Laboratory results have been reported on 28 suspected cases thus far in 2015. Of those 27 were negative for yellow fever and one was positive in a sample from Timtiba village, Kenieba health district, Koulikoro region in the southwest of the country.

The Ministry of Health has strengthened the investigation team in the region and an immunisation response is underway; 2272 individuals have been vaccinated thus far. An awareness campaign is also being carried out among the local communities and epidemiological surveillance has been strengthened.

Advice for Travellers

There is a risk of yellow fever in certain areas south of the Sahara Desert in Mali and vaccination is advised for travellers to these parts (unless contraindicated). There is also a certificate requirement for all travellers over 1 year of age.

Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites in Mali.
