Rabies (Human) (Feline) in Brazil

03 September 2015

A human case of rabies virus infection has been reported in Paraiba state in the northeast of Brazil.

The incident involved a 20-month old by who was reportedly bitten by a sick cat. The child received care is hospital in Rio Grande del Norte state when he became unwell on 20 August 2015, and was transferred for specialist care when he became aggressive, irritable and photophobic. Rabies virus was confirmed in the cat by the Pasteur Institute in Sao Paulo on 28 August.

The Milwaukee protocol was initiated but was unsuccessfull and sadly the child died on 30 August 2015. The cat also bit the boy's father and four other individuals; the report does not mention post-exposure treatment for those individuals. It is thought likely that the cat had contact with a vampire bat.

Advice for Travellers

Brazil is considered by WHO to be a country with a high risk of animal rabies. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is sometimes advised for travellers considered to be at risk. Travellers should avoid all animal contact and report any bites promptly for medical assessment.
