Malaria in Nigeria

07 September 2015

An outbreak of malaria has been ogoing for around two months in northern Nigeria. The media reports that ten districts are affected by the upsurge in malaria cases, with between 8000-10 000 new infections per week. The total number of cases has not been reported, however, earlier reports mentioned 23 000 cases.

The affected districts include Lamwo, Gulu, Kitgum, Oyam, Agago, Apac, Amuru, Kole, Nwoya and Pader. An official from the Malaria Control Programme at the Ministry of Health suggests that the outbreak may be linked to evolved, resistant mosquitoes.
