Circulating Vaccine Derived Poliovirus in Mali (ex Guinea)

08 September 2015

The World Health Organization has confirmed an imported case of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in the capital city of Bamako in the southwest of Mali. The individual concerned is a 19-month old child of Guinean nationality who had onset of paralysis on 20 July 2015, seven days before arriving in Mali for medical attention.

The virus identified in this case is genetically linked to a confirmed VDPV detected in Siguiri district, in the Kankan Region of Guinea in August 2014. The last case of wild polio virus in Mali was in June 2011 in Goundam, Timbuktu Region.

The Ministries of Health for Mali and Guinea, WHO and the other partners are conducting an investigation into the emergence and spread of the virus. Emergency operations to mount a robust and appropriate response are being organized in both countries to prevent further spread of the virus and quickly contain the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of polio vaccine according to the UK childhood schedule. It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected. Travellers should also take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
