Dengue Fever in the Philippines (Update)

Media report that nine towns in Apayao, Abra and Mt. Province in the Cordillera region have declared a dengue outbreak as cases continue to rise in the past weeks. The latest data from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit showed that from January 1 to September 14, some 4525 dengue cases have been recorded compared to only 1611 cases recorded over the same period last year or a 181 percent increase in dengue cases in the Cordillera region.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
