Chikungunya Virus Infection in Senegal

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (MOHSA) of Senegal has notified WHO of an outbreak of chikungunya virus infection in the region of Kédougou in the southeast of the country.

Circulation of the virus was identified on 27 August 2015, samples taken from 14 suspected cases were sent for laboratory testing at the Institut Pasteur of Dakar. Of those, 10 were confirmed positive for chikungunya virus as of 8 September 2015. Chikungunya virus last circulated in this area between 2009-2010.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
