Cholera in Iraq

21 September 2015

On 15 September 2015, the Ministry of Health for Iraq declared an outbreak of cholera in Najaf and Diwaniya governorates and areas of west Baghdad. The outbreak was first identified following an increase in the number of diarrhoeal illnessess reported. The Central Public Health Laboratory confirmed cholera in 38 out of 106 samples tested. A Cholera Task Force, comprising the MOH, WHO, and other UN partners wil manage the response and liaise with health authorities in affected areas to contain the outbreak.

The water authorities at both national and subnational levels have implemented steps to improve the quality and safety of water in affected areas, by chlorination, monitoring of water quality and improving personal hygiene in the community.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
