West Nile Fever in Europe (and Surrounding Countries)

The West Nile virus (WNV) transmission season (Jun-Nov) in Europe and surrounding countries is ongoing and further cases have been reported in the last week:

  • Italy - 11 cases, 9 from areas known to be infected; Bologna (2), Milano (3), Modena (2) and Parma (2). Two cases were reported from the newly infected areas of Rimini and Rovigo.
  • Hungary - 4 cases in areas known to be infected; Budapest (2), Fejer (1) and Hajdu Bihar (1).
  • Romania - 4 cases, one from Ialomita county, an area known to be infected and 3 cases from two newly affected counties; Buzau (2) and Ilfov (1).
  • Israel - 10 cases in known infected areas; Central District (4), Southern District (2), Northern District (1) and Tel Aviv (3).
  • Russian Federation - 4 cases in Saratovskaya Oblast, an area known to be infected.
  • Serbia - 6 cases in areas know to be infected; Grad Beograd (5) and South Banat District (1).

Advice for Travellers

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for WNV. Infection is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, therefore avoidance of mosquito bites is essential, by covering up and the use of bite avoidance measures.
