Chikungunya Virus Infection in Mexico (Update)

Transmission of chikungunya virus is ongoing in Mexico. As of 18 September 2015, a total of 6314 cases have been recorded. Nineteen out of 32 states have reported cases. The worst affected states include: Guerrero (1464 cases), Oaxaca (1031), Michoacan (869), Veracruz (785), Chiapas (549), Colima (494) and Morelos 259 cases.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
