Cholera in Democratic Republic of Congo

01 October 2015

The media has reported on a cholera outbreak in the Democatic Republic of Congo (DRC). On 23 September 2015, the Minister of Public Health confirmed a cholera outbreak in the Province of Maniema with a total of 1078 cases and 52 cholera deaths. The worst affected areas are the town of Kindu, and the health zones of Kailo and Kalingula. Other affected health zones include: Katanga, North Kivu and South Kivu.

The government has reponded quickly to the outbreak and is supporting local leaders in containing the outbreak. Healthcare teams have been deployed into the affected areas. Unsanitary conditions around the rivers and low coverage of safe drinking water are thought to be the cause of the outbreak. Nationally, DRC has recorded a total of 9704 cholera cases with 113 deaths thus far in 2015.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
