Cholera in Iraq (Update)

The cholera outbreak first reported on 15 September 2015, is ongoing and the Health Ministry reported 101 new cases on Monday 5 October. This brings the total number of cases to 979 thus far. The central province of Babil has reported 60 of the new cases. New cases have also been reported from: the city of Diwaniyah (17), al-Rusafa district, east Baghdad (16) and Karkh in the west of Baghdad (8).

The government has ordered measures to improve hygiene in the community, including daily water quality tests, distribution of bottled water to those internally displaced due to the conflict and the installation of additional water purification stations.

The Ministry of Education has deferred opening primary schools in the affected areas until 18 October 2015, to ensure that precautionary measures are in place prior to the children attending.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
